Noto Color Emoji is an open-source color emoji font developed and maintained by Google. It is the default emoji font for Android and one of the most comprehensive and frequently updated open-source emoji fonts globally. Noto Color Emoji uses the OpenType CBDT format, supporting color emoji rendering.
The "Noto" in its name comes from Google's "No Tofu" initiative. When a character lacks font support, the system displays a white missing-glyph box (โ), commonly called "Tofu." The core mission of the Noto project is to eliminate these unsightly tofu blocks by providing fonts that cover all Unicode characters.
Noto Color Emoji's visual design follows Google's Material Design language, adding subtle highlights and gradients to a flat base, balancing modern UI simplicity with liveliness.
