Zero Width Joiner

Zero Width Joiner (abbreviated ZWJ) is an invisible control character that takes up no display width. Its core function is to join two or more independent characters into a single glyph. In modern text systems, its primary and widespread use is to build emoji ZWJ sequences, creating new compound emoji by connecting multiple base emoji.

Design Purpose

Unicode's design philosophy favors combining sequences rather than assigning a unique code point to every variant, to prevent code point space explosion and maintain extensibility. ZWJ is the key "glue" that implements this combining model.

Application in Emoji

By joining multiple independent emoji with ZWJ, a new emoji that is semantically and visually a single unit can be generated. If the platform supports the sequence, it renders as one graphic; if not, it falls back to showing the individual characters separately.
